Three Tuba Miniatures premiered at Melba Hall, University of Melbourne

This week the Melba Hall at the University of Melbourne will see the world premiere of Matthew Dewey’s Three Tuba Miniatures. The concert, which forms part of Faculty of Music Free Monday Lunch Hour Concert Series features leading Australian brass figures Brendon Lukin (Tuba and Organ) and Yoram Levy (Trumpet) together with Stefan Cassomenos (piano) in a varied program of new music and avant-garde music from the 20th century.

Dewey Lecturing in Composition at the University of Tasmania

Matthew Dewey will be lecturing in composition at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music for the second semester of 2008. The move comes as current dean of school and head of composition Professor Douglas Knehans moves to accept a new position as Dean of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Symphony No.1 to be premiered by the Hobart Chamber Orchestra in May 2008

The Hobart Chamber Orchestra will premiere Matthew Dewey's first symphony in concert at the Hobart Town on the 17th of May. The piece is in three movements and was inspired by Tom Holloway's play "Beyond the Neck" which explores the lives of four characters who had all been affected in profoundly different ways by the Port Arthur massacre of 1996. The premiere will be conducted by the former concert master of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (and new head of strings at the University of Tasmania) Professor Edwin Paling.

underwhere Performs to Sell-Out Crowds and Acclaim at the Adelaide Fringe Festival

Lucy Who productions this week presented"Underwhere" in a sell out season at the Adelaide Fringe Festival! Supported by funding from Arts Tasmania, the show featured at the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) - a meeting ground for Australian and International producers and festival makers. The performance features incredibly beautiful surreal visual imagery and an electro-acoustic score composed by Matthew Dewey, consisting of street sounds that merge with recorded and abstract musical samples.

Double Bill of Chamber Opera in Concert

In August 2007 at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, two of Matthew Dewey's chamber operas will be featured in concert, jointly produced by the IHOS Music Theatre Laboratory and the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. The operas, “The Buzz of the Sea”and “The Death of Chatterton” will be performed by some of Tasmania's leading talents: Baritones Christopher Richardson and Michael Lampard and the fantastic pianist Karen Smithies. Matthew Dewey played the lead role of Douglas Mawson in Joe Bugden's new opera "The Call of Aurora" in a concert version at the Peacock Theatre on Saturday the 17th of November. Premiere of Aria from ‘The Buzz of the Sea’

Tasmanian Baritone Michael Lampard together with Pianist Karen Smithies will give the premiere of an aria from the new opera by Matthew Dewey with libretto by NIDA graduate Alexander Dick called The Buzz of the Sea. The opera, composed specifically for Michael to perform, is a one man chamber opera designed to act as a double bill for Dewey's second opera, The Death of Chatterton. The aria will be premiered in concert at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music in Hobart on Thursday, November 8 at 7:30pm.

String Symphony underway for Hobart Chamber Orchestra Commision

The Hobart Chamber Orchestra have commissioned a new work from Matthew Dewey to be played in two concerts featuring all new music in mid-2008. The piece, a string symphony in three movements, will be somewhere in the duration of 15 to 17 minutes and reflects on the history and environment of the Tasman Peninsula region. The premiere will be conducted by eminent French conductor Jean-Louis Forestier .

Matthew has begun work on a new work for piano virtuoso Michael Kieren Harvey. Two Performances of ‘Flight and Reverie’ in Hawaii

New music for Gambas is not a thing we much about, but in August 2007 Australian Viol player and the leader of Backgammon Gambas, Brooke Green, premiered Matthew Dewey's newly commissioned quartet 'Flight and Reverie' in two programs of all Australian Music at the 'Pan-Pacific Gamba Gathering' in Hawaii. The performances, which took place at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu were very successful with great interest taken in the new work. Other composers featured include Peter Sculthorpe, Elena Kats-Chernin, Ross Edwards and Russell Gilmore although the piece by Matthew Dewey was the only world premiere.

This friday, Terrapin Puppet Theatre launches it's new work ‘Con Artists'. The one-hour show, which follows the adventures of Max and Milly, embarks on a fifty show tour of Tasmania's primary schools. The work, by Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, is directed by Robert Jarman, co-designed by Greg Methe and Roz Wren. Matthew has just completed the score for a short animation called 'In a Pig's Eye' by Irish animator John Paul Molloy, the founder of Twisted Animator Productions and Irish audio specialist Michael Nestor (visit Michael Nestor's website). The film, which features the voice of eminent Australian Actor (Barry Otto at IMDB), was developed through the School of Audio Engineering in Sydney and has been entered internationally in short film competitions. The score was recorded at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and features the University of Tasmania Chamber Soloists String Orchestra under the direction of Peter Tanfield.
