Matthew has been called in at the last minute to assist on the premiere of Tom Holloway’s new play about the Port Arthur incident, ‘Beyond The Neck’. The show, directed by Sydney based Director Iain Sinclair, features the talent of one of Australia’s most respected actors Ron Haddrick, together with the brilliant Tasmanian cast of Sara Cooper, Jonathan auf der Heide and Jemma Gates. Lighting Design Daniel Zika, Production Design Jamie Clennet.
Matthew has been called in to assist talented Sound Designer / Composer Stephen Toulmin with string quartet arrangements and some additional composition at the end of an extremely tight schedule – a sudden production change meant that Stephen was given only two nights to come up with music for the show! None-the-less, after numerous phone calls and a lot of work, the score was recorded at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music performed by the very able Hutchins String Quartet.
Beyond the Neck will play in Hobart this week before touring to Launceston.
Profoundly affected by the events at Port Arthur in 1996, Tasmanian Playwright Tom Holloway (who was 17 at the time) was moved to write this play. Based on in-depth interviews and years of research, the story is set ten years later and celebrates the power of community and recovery.
‘It is a remarkable play and Tom is an authentic, original and exciting new playwright.’ Leo Butler, Royal Court Theatre London 2007.
Director Iain Sinclair comes straight from a series of successful productions in Sydney including Lord of the Flies at the Stables and ex Tasmanian designer Jamie Clennett, a NIDA design graduate, has just completed the Animation for Dr.Egg & The Man With No Ear at the Sydney Opera House.
