Double Bill of Chamber Opera in Concert

In August 2007 at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, two of Matthew Dewey’s chamber operas will be featured in concert, jointly produced by the IHOS Music Theatre Laboratory and the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. The operas, ‘The Buzz of the Sea’and ‘The Death of Chatterton’ will be performed by some of Tasmania’s leading talents: Baritones Christopher Richardson and Michael Lampard and the fantastic pianist Karen Smithies. Premiere of Aria from ‘The Buzz of the Sea’

Tasmanian Baritone Michael Lampard together with Pianist Karen Smithies will give the premiere of an aria from the new opera by Matthew Dewey with libretto by NIDA graduate Alexander Dick called The Buzz of the Sea. The opera, composed specifically for Michael to perform, is a one man chamber opera designed to act as a double bill for Dewey’s second opera, The Death of Chatterton. String Symphony underway for Hobart Chamber Orchestra Commission

The Hobart Chamber Orchestra have commissioned a new work from Matthew Dewey to be played in two concerts featuring all new music in mid-2008. The piece, a string symphony in three movements, will be somewhere in the duration of 15 to 17 minutes and reflects on the history and environment of the Tasman Peninsula region.
