TIME PASSES
Music to Michelangelo
Michael Lampard – Baritone
Karen Smithies – Piano
Jo St. Leon – Viola
A vocal recital as part of the 2011 Mona Foma Festival.
Three modern song cycles based on the poetry of Renaissance artist Michelangelo. This side of his artistic life, over shadowed by his prolific work as a painter and sculptor, has inspired many composers over the years, but his tortured, knotty and highly personal poetry is still one of the least known aspects of his creativity.
The three works presented show the struggle of the artist coming to terms with his sexuality, his artistic legacy and mortality.
Dmitri Shostakovich: Suite on Verses of Michelangelo
Peter Maxwell-Davies: Tondi di Michelangelo (AUST. PREMIERE)
Matthew Dewey: Il Tempo Passa (WORLD PREMIERE)
Baha’i Centre (behind the ABC), Hobart.
Sunday 16th and Monday 17th January 2011. 6pm both nights.
